The current political environment has raised the ire of investors. In fact, fifty-three percent of investors indicate that they are slightly more or significantly more interested in politics than in the past.
Only eight percent are less interested in politics than in the past.
Why is there such an interest in politics? Almost half of investors (49%) indicate they are interested in seeing what the Trump administration and Congress will do. This is especially true for younger investors. Twenty eight percent of investors indicate they support the administration and want them to be successful but 30 percent despise the current administration and want to see them fail.
Congress needs to realize that investors are watching them closely. And they don’t agree with how they are conducting business. In fact, when asked how they felt about Congress always voting along party lines, fifty-four percent of investors strongly disapprove and twenty-eight percent disapproved somewhat. Less than ten percent felt it was appropriate. In fact, eighty nine percent of investors believe that their Congressional representatives should vote for what is right for his or her constituents and not along party lines! In fact, investors agreed with this feeling regardless of their political party (88% Republican, 90% Democrat, 90% Independent).
Another interesting fact is that seventy-seven percent of investors indicated that the U.S. should not have career politicians. Republicans and Independents supported this concept at over eighty percent. Democrats were lower with only sixty-four percent in agreement.
So in the coming weeks as Congress continues to debate both funding and DACA, maybe it’s time they each began to think for themselves and vote for what is right for their own constituents and not just their political party. If they cannot begin to reach across the aisle to come to some agreements and to move the agenda forward for all Americans, maybe investors will actually vote them all out in 2018 and beyond.
Here’s to principle over party!
